Everyone thinks that the biggest fear of students is exams, but in reality, “Do they actually fear exams?” No, students are not actually scared of exams anymore. But where did the real fear start, Learning, Skills, Future, or Lectures? In reality, not any of these. The real fear for students starts with placements. Even for very brilliant and high-scoring students, fear of placements outweighs exam fear.
So, now the biggest question arises, “Why is the placement fear more for students than exams?”
Among students, the fear of placement starts with their future. They come up with a lot of questions in their mind once the placement starts, which leads them to fear and anxiety. The main reason for the fear will be the previous year’s placement percentage. In 2025, only ablout 17% to 45% of students secure campus placements, and the failure rates increased to 65% to 83%, which makes students more fearful. Even premium institutions like IITs and NITs face failure rates ranging from 25% to 36%. The Mercer and Mettl Graduate Skill Index states that only 42.6% of students are considered overall employable, and reports such as India Skills estimate it is closer to 54.8%.

With all the fear about students’ placements, the fear of exams feels less. Exams come with a syllabus, textbooks, and a certain pattern which students know beforehand. Students walk into placements carrying more than just resumes and certificates; they carry the expectations, hopes, and fears. Exams test their academic knowledge students while placements seem to determine the next chapter of their life. A poor or failed exam result can often be improved in the next semester, but many students perceive placement rejection as a setback to their career aspirations.
Placements are just a pathway for students’ success and not their whole future. Students can also secure jobs through off-campus opportunities, internships, networking, higher education, or entrepreneurship. Placement offers a significant milestone, but it does not define the ability and future success of students.
Instead of worrying about the outcomes in placement, students have to gain practical exposure and improve their communication and confidence. When students start preparing for careers, not just placements, the fear gradually turns into confidence. At the end, placement is not about getting an offer letter; it is about becoming truly employable.
